Author: Laurie Mitch

Who owns domain names? Knowing the answer to this question may require some forms of steps and application. But today, I will provide not particular steps for you to know who own domain names but a somewhat general view coupled with specific ideas.

Many people today are not sure if they own their domain name or not. This so happens since there is a great chances that neither you nor anybody in your company has ever verify to see who owns domain names. According to some researches, it is so typical for domain names to be owned by a certain firm employee. Who owns domain names? Well, it is also typical that the web site designers or an internet service provider owns a domain name.

Generally, a person who owns domain names or the initial owner who is technically called the “licensee” of a domain name is the person or entity that is listed as the domain name registrant. Knowing who owns domain names can be identified on the application signed for a domain name that is submitted to the domain name registrar.

But with the advent of the internet, knowing who owns domain names is made as easy as it is. It is then very easy to determine who owns domain names since there are so many domain name services today that help you to determine the answer to such problem. In the internet, a person who owns domain names is a licensed one or who is shown as the domain name registrant on the whois database of the registrar. Speaking of the domain name registrars, it is interesting to know that they are authorized by the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN to issue domain names to the public.

The whois database maintained by the domain name registrars that list contact information about all the domain names issued by the registrar then serves as a major vehicle for knowing who owns domain names. And fortunately, this vehicle for determining who owns domain names is now available on the web and is open to be searched.

So speaking of this vehicle for determining who owns domain names, it is important that you check the ownership of a domain name in the whois database of the great domain name companies on the web today like the Network Solutions and the Bettr-Whois.com. For you to know who owns domain names, you need to type in the name of the domain name and the top level domain name such as .com, .net, .org, .biz and others and then click the search button. It is important to learn that if the domain name is in the whois database, the search results will show the contact information of the domain name holder so you will know who owns domain names. The information that will help you to determine who owns domain names include the name of the registrant, the administrative contact, billing contact, technical contact, record expiration date, and record creation date.

Finally, any person or entity named as a contact on the whois database has the authority to adversely affect the domain name. So for you to really know who owns domain names, it is important that you exactly know how to perform the necessary moves in the search.

The extension you select makes a statement to user about where you are and who you are aiming to attract. For example, .co.uk tells people you are operating out of the United Kingdom, and .ca tells them you are operating out of Canada. If that is important to you, then register accordingly. If you would rather give them impression of being a global company, or based in the US, then pick a .com name. 2. Use a reputable registration service. Unfortunately, some domain registration services are little more than a scam. They are only middlemen. You tell them the domain name you want, and they register it, for a fee higher than you would pay! In the worst case, they actually register the domain name using their information, so it becomes very difficult for you to do anything with your domain name. Do some background research into the company before you register a domain with them. 3. Use keywords in your domain name. These will sometimes help search engines in ranking your website. For example, if you sell gourmet dog treats online and from your own store, but your business name is "Laura's Homemade Snacks," you might consider two domain names: one for your business name, and one for keywords. In this case you might select "gourmetdogtreats.com" as your domain name to...
